ABC’s to a Successful School Year

Aug 22, 2017

With the new school year now upon us, it’s time to officially say goodbye to summer and hello to your new family routine. Here are some essential tips to starting off the new school year on the right foot.

Address any ongoing or new concerns regarding your child(ren) as early in the school year as possible. A medical check up at the beginning of the school year is recommended to discuss any worrisome issues. Our pediatric practitioners review age appropriate health, social, and safety topics as well as provide screenings for vision, hearing, and developmental milestones. These trained pediatric specialists can help guide better sleep routines, eating habits, and hygiene in addition to offering appropriate referrals when needed.

Bring healthy snacks whenever possible. It is no secret that consuming nutritious snacks will help contribute to a well-rounded diet. When life gets hectic it becomes easy to choose the most convenient snack, which is often an unhealthy option (I’m looking at you sugary and fried snacks!). A combination of protein and carbohydrates is best when choosing snacks for lunch boxes or time in the car between school and sports practice because it helps control kids’ and parents’ hunger. Having individual servings prepared of pre-cut fruit, celery sticks, carrot sticks, and cucumbers paired with hummus, guacamole, and nut butters are healthy and fun for kids. Trail mix combinations of mixed nuts, dried fruit, seeds, cereals, and granola is an excellent snack that can be stored anywhere from the diaper bag to the glove compartment of the car.

Create a schedule. It’s not just about creating a family/child’s schedule, but the ability to stick to it. Unexpected events come up, and spontaneity can be fun. However, kids thrive on schedules and understanding expectations of them from parents. When there are set homework and bedtime routines, children can better manage their time and adhere to their responsibilities. Try to be consistent with desired routines. Naturally, bedtimes are later in the summer; so adhering to school year bedtimes, even on weekends, will help them acclimate best.
